Santuario Arakura Fuji Sengen

Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine was founded in 705 AD, during the reign of Empress Genmei, as a shrine to pacify the deity of the nearby Arakura Mountain. It was later incorporated into the network of Sengen shrines dedicated to the goddess Konohanasakuya-hime, the deity of Mount Fuji. The shrine gained strategic importance during the Warring States period as the Takeda and later Tokugawa clans used the hilltop location for surveying.

The famous Chureito Pagoda, which has become the shrine's iconic landmark, was actually built in 1963 as a peace memorial dedicated to the 960 war dead from Fujiyoshida City. Though relatively modern, the pagoda's perfect framing of Mount Fuji has made it one of the most photographed spots in all of Japan.

Cosa vedere

The 398-step stone staircase leads visitors up through a forested hillside to the shrine grounds. The crown jewel is the five-story Chureito Pagoda, which provides what many consider the most iconic view of Mount Fuji in existence. In spring, cherry blossoms frame the pagoda with Fuji in the background, creating the quintessential Japanese landscape photograph.

The main shrine hall sits further up the hill and offers a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere. The surrounding forest is particularly beautiful during autumn when the maple leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold.

Festival principali

The shrine's annual grand festival is held in late April, coinciding with the beginning of cherry blossom season. During the Fujiyoshida Fire Festival (Yoshida no Hi Matsuri) in late August, the area comes alive with massive torches lit along the main road, creating a spectacular river of fire at the base of Mount Fuji. This festival marks the end of the official climbing season.
