Il santuario del leggendario Onmyoji

Allontanare il male
Protezione
Guarigione

Dedicato ad Abe no Seimei, il leggendario maestro Onmyoji (yin-yang). Noto per la protezione contro il male e il simbolo del pentagramma onnipresente.

Storia del santuario

Seimei Shrine was established in 1007 AD by Emperor Ichijo to honor the legendary onmyoji (yin-yang master) Abe no Seimei, who served six emperors during the Heian period. Seimei was the most famous practitioner of onmyodo, a cosmological system combining astronomy, divination, and magic that was essential to the governance of the Heian court.

The shrine fell into disrepair over the centuries but experienced a dramatic revival in the late 20th century, largely driven by the popularity of novels, manga, and films about Abe no Seimei. Today, it is one of Kyoto's most popular shrines, drawing visitors fascinated by the mystical world of Heian-period divination and magic.

Cosa vedere

The shrine's distinctive pentagram star (Seimei-kiku or Douman-Seimei) symbol is visible throughout the grounds, on lanterns, gates, and decorations. This five-pointed star, representing the five Chinese elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), is the shrine's emblem and the most recognizable symbol of onmyodo in Japan.

The Seimei Well, said to have been used by Seimei himself, still produces crystal-clear water. The shrine also features a peach sculpture (believed to absorb bad luck when touched) and statues depicting scenes from Seimei's legendary encounters with supernatural beings.

Festival principali

The Seimei-sai Festival, held around the autumn equinox (September 22-23), recreates Heian-period ceremonies with priests performing traditional onmyodo rituals. The Setsubun ceremony in February features a special demon-dispelling ritual based on Seimei's legendary techniques. Throughout the year, the shrine offers unique fortune-telling experiences rooted in onmyodo traditions.
