신사의 역사

Kehi Jingu is one of the most important shrines in the Hokuriku region, with a history stretching back to the 2nd century AD. According to shrine records, it was established during the reign of Emperor Chuai and became a major center for maritime worship, as Tsuruga was one of ancient Japan's most important port cities, serving as a gateway for trade and cultural exchange with the Korean peninsula and mainland China.

The shrine gained significant patronage from successive imperial courts and the Tokugawa shogunate. Its massive red torii gate, one of the three greatest torii in Japan along with those of Itsukushima and Kasuga Taisha, has stood as a landmark of Tsuruga Bay for centuries.

볼거리

The shrine's most iconic feature is its enormous vermilion Otorii (Great Torii Gate), standing 11 meters tall and spanning 7.5 meters. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property and is recognized as one of Japan's three finest torii gates. The gate's massive wooden pillars and sweeping curves create a stunning first impression.

The main hall sits within a serene forested precinct. The shrine also features a sacred pine grove and the Tsunuga statue, representing the Korean prince Tsunuga Arashito who, according to legend, gave Tsuruga city its name. A sacred spring within the grounds is believed to have healing properties.

주요 축제

The Kehi Jingu Grand Festival, held September 2-15, is the largest festival in Fukui Prefecture and one of the great festivals of the Hokuriku region. The highlight is the Mikoshi Togyo procession on September 4th, where portable shrines are carried through the city streets in a spirited display. The festival also features magnificent float parades and traditional performing arts.
