One of the oldest shrines in Japan, Ikuta Shrine in the heart of Kobe is famous for its connection to the founding of Japan and as a powerful spot for love and relationship blessings.
History of the Shrine
Ikuta Shrine claims an incredibly ancient origin, established in 201 AD according to tradition. Its history is so intertwined with the city that the very name 'Kobe' is thought to derive from 'Kanbe' (families who served the shrine). The shrine has survived centuries of turmoil, including being a temporary command post during the famous Genpei War in the 12th century.
Most recently, the shrine was severely damaged in the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. Its reconstruction became a symbol of the city's resilience and recovery, making it a powerful place not just for ancient blessings, but for praying for personal renewal after hardship.

What to See
The shrine is unique for its urban setting, tucked behind the main shopping arcades of Sannomiya. The lush 'Ikuta no Mori' forest behind the shrine provides a peaceful green escape from the city center. This forest is especially romantic during the changing seasons.
As a shrine famous for 'enmusubi' (relationship ties), it is very popular for traditional Japanese weddings and with couples seeking blessings for their relationships.
Major Festivals
The 'Nada no Kenka Matsuri' is not at Ikuta, but the shrine hosts its own lively Autumn Festival. New Year's 'Hatsumode' at Ikuta is one of the most popular in the Kansai region, drawing over 1.5 million visitors in the first few days of January.
