History of the Shrine
Kirishima Jingu's history is deeply intertwined with Japanese mythology. According to legend, this is the area where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, descended from the heavenly realm to rule the earthly realm, an event known as 'Tenson Korin' (Descent of the Heavenly Grandson). This mythological event marks the beginning of the imperial lineage of Japan.
The shrine has been rebuilt several times over the centuries due to volcanic eruptions from the nearby Kirishima mountain range. The current main hall was reconstructed in 1715 and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The shrine's resilience through natural disasters is seen as a testament to the enduring power of the kami it enshrines.

These festivals celebrate the divine origins of Japan and the connection between heaven and earth.
