Locally known as 'Afuri-yama' (Rainfall Mountain), this shrine sits on Mount Oyama. It has been a popular pilgrimage destination since the Edo period ('Oyama-mairi') and offers stunning views.

History of the Shrine

Founded over 2,200 years ago during the reign of Emperor Sujin. The mountain itself has long been worshipped as a rain-calling deity, vital for farmers. During the Edo period, 'Oyama-mairi' (Pilgrimage to Oyama) became a massive trend among the commoners of Edo (Tokyo), combining religious devotion with leisure travel.

People would carry giant wooden cleaning swords ('dengaku-babo') to offer to the shrine. This vibrant pilgrim culture is designated as a Japan Heritage.

What to See

The shrine is split into the 'Shimosha' (Lower Shrine), accessible by cable car, and the 'Honsha' (Head Shrine) at the mountain summit, which requires a steep hike. The Lower Shrine offers a Michelin-starred view of Sagami Bay, Enoshima, and even the Izu Islands. The night view is particularly spectacular.

The mountain water, 'Oyama Meisui', is famous for its purity and is used to make the local specialty tofu ('Oyama Tofu').

Major Festivals

The 'Autumn Grand Festival' in late August involves the carrying of mikoshi down the steep mountain steps. In October, a Noh theater performance is held by firelight ('Takigi Noh'), a mystical event with deep cultural roots.
